Upbringing

Pavel was born in 1826 in a Crimean, jewish family. His father, Lev Saghalev was a clockmaker while his mother was the daughter of a naval architect in Sevastopol. Lev died when Pavel was very young. He was raised as a in the small town-home of his maternal grandfather, but was treated differently because of his mixed ethnic background.

His mother, Galina, insisted that Pavel be brought in the strictest Orthodox tradition. Pavel was schooled in the city and kept in a short leash to keep him out of trouble.
